A team of researchers from the Departments of Software, Automatic Control, Strength of MaMechanical Engineering, Materials and Structural Engineering at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), led by Ulises Cortés and Antonio B. Martínez, has designed an intelligent walker (i-Walker) that goes a step beyond conventional walkers as it can communicate with the user, think for itself and react to the environment.
The device can understand a set of voice commands and can be activated by means of simple verbal instructions given by the user (e.g., "take me to the kitchen"). To do this, it includes elements for independent movement and a personalized intelligent software agent.

| Medical: Prostate Cancer Treatment Determined by AI |

Prostate cancer is the most widespread type of cancer affecting men and the second most common cause of terminal cancer in the UK.
Despite the prevalence of the disease, very little is known about its direct causes and deciding on a disease management plan for a patient can be difficult.
To address this, a research project being undertaken by the School of Computing at the Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen is using artificial intelligence to assist physicians in making their decision.

| Medical: Autonomous Tabletop Robotic Surgery At Duke |

An autonomous tabletop robot surgeon has taken its first steps toward reality at Duke University; the device could have immediate results in making some current medical procedures safer for patients.
Engineers started with a tabletop robot that used 3-D ultrasound for vision; the 3-D images were then processed in real time, with the computer's brain directing the actions of the robot.
"In a number of tasks, the computer was able to direct the robot's actions," said Stephen Smith, director of the Duke University Ultrasound Transducer Group and senior member of the research team. "We believe that this is the first proof-of-concept for this approach. Given that we achieved these early results with a rudimentary robot and a basic artificial intelligence program, the technology will advance to the point where robots – without the guidance of the doctor – can someday operate on people."

What do you call a surgeon who operates without scalpels, stitching tools or a powerful headlamp to light the patient’s insides? A better doctor, according to a growing number of surgeons who prefer to hand over much of the blood-and-guts portion of their work to medical robots controlled from computer consoles.
Many urologists performing prostate surgery view the precise, tremor-free movements of a robot as the best way to spare nerves crucial to bladder control and sexual potency. A robot’s ability to deftly handle small tools may lead to a less invasive procedure and faster recovery for a patient. Robots also can protect surgeons from physical stress and exposure to X-rays that may force them into premature retirement.

| Medical: AI System Predicts Medicine's Hidden Powers |

Treatments for new or drug-resistant infectious diseases may already be in our medicine cabinets, say the molecular biologists responsible for developing an artificial-intelligence system that can predict unknown antibiotic properties of existing drugs.
The hope is that the work will result in an armoury of new treatments that can be rushed into service when standard treatments stop being effective or new pathogens arise.
"In the case of new infectious diseases, there might be no time to develop a completely new drug from the ground up," says Artem Cherkasov of the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada, who made the proposal this week at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston, Massachusetts.

"I see Pop's been conducting midnight ice cream raids again," she quips in an e-mail to her siblings the next day.
A couple of hundred miles away, in a test apartment in Seattle, a computer engineer perfects technology he hopes might someday allow people like his aging parents to stay in their homes years longer.
