Educational: Part 2: Teachers! Your time is UP!
Educational

Imagine you are a student, it's not hard. Imagine the stress with trying to take notes whilst following your instructor, you know you've got no chance of even understanding what the instructor just said and the only thing you'll get if you stick up your hand and try to clarify on some apparently foggy details will be a stern look and an invisible 'stupid!' sticker on your forehead.

But all that is set to change;

uMind, perhaps one of the most interesting companies created in the spring following the AI Winter, has created uLearn, a type of system normally known as an 'Intelligent Tutor Interface', a system that can monitor, guide and, above all, adapt to a student whilst taking the role of instructor.

Not just another instructor, but one who is, effectively, at your beck and call. This has magnificent potential far outstripping that of traditional learning methods; not least the prime reason being one-to-one lessons.

Educational: Teachers! Your time is UP!
Educational I don't know about you, but at school, I had some terrible, terrible teachers. They didn't give a damn about getting the students to understand a topic, if we could parrot the words from a text-book, they would be happy.

So where would these 'AI Teachers' come from? Well....

I bet your thinking "But Dante! They can barely talk properly now!" but therein lies the problem, my child. The machines your thinking of are old-tech and a number of people are now tossing them in the garbage in preparation for the next stage of AI tech.

 Educational: Masters in Artificial Intelligence
Educational The Master of Science which will be offered by the University of Southampton's School of Electronics & Computer Science (ECS) in October this year, builds on the School's flourishing MS program which this year attracted a record 145 students.

The new MS degree in Artificial Intelligence is research-led and incorporates both traditional and state-of-the art aspects of AI and Machine Learning, opening the path to many different subject areas and technologies.

With the rapid growth in this field, programs like this have begun to spring up in universities around the world. It is only a matter of time before Artificial Intelligence becomes a common graduate degree.

Educational: Software Grades Handwritten Essays and Boosts Comprehension
Educational Computer scientists in the University at Buffalo's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have been working with their colleagues in UB's Graduate School of Education to develop a computational tool that not only dramatically reduces the time it takes to grade children's handwritten essays, but that also may help boost students' reading comprehension skills.

The National Science Foundation recently awarded the UB researchers a $100,000 grant to develop new algorithms that could eventually allow computers to take over the grading of children's handwritten essays.

Educational: New AI Education Products for K-12
Educational Quantum Simulations, Inc., a business-to-business developer of artificial intelligence (AI) tutoring, assessment and professional development software, launched a new web site today to share the company's vision to address five critical needs in education: Homework Help, Personalized Tutoring, Assessment, Professional Development and Accessibility.

In business for over nine years, Quantum is a "technology think tank" for its distribution and collaborating partners, leveraging more than $7 million in federal research funding. Currently, Quantum is broadening its product offerings and subject areas include Chemistry, Developmental Mathematics and Accounting.

"Quantum is able to apply its technology across many product applications and subject disciplines because the same AI engines and knowledge engineering that drive tutoring and homework help also serve as the core for our assessment and professional development products," stated Dr. Benny Johnson, President and CEO of Quantum. "This model allows us to scale quickly horizontally into new content areas and vertically into new web-based applications based on customer need and market opportunity with our partners."

 Educational: Newton, Einstein Go Digital
Educational "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction," says Isaac Newton, throwing his long wavy hair over a shoulder and adjusting the collar of his 17th-century shirt.

A 13-year-old boy wrinkles his brow and steps with baggy pants onto an orange skateboard.

"Don't understand? Let's use your skateboard as an example," says Newton, pointing toward the device invented centuries after his death.

These are not actors but rather a curious modern-day boy interacting with a life-like, computer-generated version of the famous physicist who authored the three laws of motion — among other things.

So far, that kind of conversation is still fiction. But it's the ultimate goal of a new research project that plans to merge gaming technology with artificial intelligence to build an archive of virtual figures that behave and respond as naturally as real people.

Educational: Beating the bullies at the touch of a button
Educational Edinburgh scientists have unveiled the latest weapon against school bullies - a £2.7 million computer game. Researchers at Heriot-Watt University led a project to develop the pioneering programme which allows children to tackle cyber bullies in preparation for real-life playground scuffles.
It is now set to be trialled in schools in the UK and Germany, with city council chiefs keen to become involved. The artificial intelligence programme allows children to watch bullying behaviour and decide what action the victim should take. Their decisions are acted out by characters on-screen.

Educational: Safety Meets Fun with NG-1
Educational When little kids see a 6-foot-tall remote-controlled robot dancing across a Wal-Mart parking lot to the strains of "Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto," they have one of two reactions.

Most stop where they are, wide-eyed, and stare for a moment before rushing from their parents' sides to meet their new aluminum and fiberglass friend. But a few still hide behind their parents' legs.

That's one kink, Michael Paul, CEO of Monroe's 21st Century Robotics, hopes he'll work out as more children meet NG-1, the crime prevention robot that he sees as the 21st century's version of McGruff the Crime Dog.

Educational: Students Show Off Their Artificial Intelligence
Educational After a shaky start, during which jitters prevailed over genius, Spruce Creek High School's robotics club team soared to fourth place in the regional Botball competition at Jacksonville the day after St. Patrick's Day.

The 18-student contingent, led by project coordinator and SCHS senior Alyssa Everhart, had two teams, each with a fully automated and programmed robot. Dubbed Quicker Tribble Picker Upper and Leeroy Jones by the inventive students, the two teams were led, respectively, by seniors Bobby Millward and Thomas Kehr.

This website was created in memory of the ChatbotFriends website which inspired me to delve deeper into the topic of Chatbots (Chatterbots). I originally started it as a replacement when that site went down, but we have since branched out a lot. We were originally the Chatbot Hub and focused mainly on chatbots but, with the growth of the site, we decided to expand out to other similar aspects of AI and rename ourselves "AI Hub". I hope that all of the visitors can be inspired by what Artificial Intelligence can accomplish.
